How to counter the threat to democracy and human rights? Strategies and options for educational practice

Die Anmeldefrist zu dieser Veranstaltung ist abgelaufen.

Online closing event of the project ‘Building Bridges with Human Rights - Civic education in transformation processes’ on 28 November 2024

The elections in Germany and Europe in 2024 have once again shown that the boundaries of what can be said are shifting and that inhumane ideologies and right-wing narratives are on the rise. The threat to democracy and human rights is becoming ever more real. The practice of civic education and human rights education may not be facing new challenges, but they are growing. At the same time, there have been successes thanks to the tireless commitment of those affected and of the general civil society.

Towards the end of the project, we would like to take a closer look at these challenges and successes. We have invited İbrahim Arslan. He is a survivor of the racist arson attack in Mölln on 23 November 1992 and encourages other victims to speak out. He visits schools as a contemporary witness and conducts workshops. In addition, İbrahim Arslan maintains contact with numerous other victims, such as relatives of victims of the NSU and the attacks in Hanau and Halle.

After a keynote by İbrahim Arslan, we will hold a panel discussion with the project staff and some of the project's Critical Friends to broaden our perspective on other topics of transformation, such as artificial intelligence, climate change and the possibilities of inclusive and anti-discriminatory educational work. How do strategies and methods of political education and human rights education need to be adapted in order to meet future challenges and transformations?

Various workshops will be offered in the afternoon. Please note: The afternoon programme including the workshops will not be translated into English! The workshops will discuss specific challenges for political education in rural areas, the potential of theatre and embodiment for human rights education will be practically explored. In a third workshop, new educational materials on the history of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be tested, making the participation of people from the Global South more visible. And finally, we also want to discuss how to deal with anti-Semitism and racism after 7 October 2023 in a workshop.
