Asylum and migration

Millions of people around the world are currently fleeing from war, violence or persecution. Others migrate to work or study in a different country, or to join their families. Some leave voluntarily, others are forced to do so. The reasons that people leave their home countries are many and varied, and it is not always possible to categorise people as either refugees - those seeking protection - or those migrating for other reasons.

Human rights apply to all everyone on the move, but these rights are repeatedly called into question by the state or by society at large. It is therefore particularly important to defend and strengthen the rights of migrants, regardless of their reasons for leaving their home country.

Key concerns

  • Anyone seeking protection from persecution, war or serious human rights violations must be granted access to a fair and individualised asylum procedure.
  • States’ fundamental and human rights obligations towards refugees and other migrants are comprehensive and must therefore be respected in all areas of life, including housing, work and health.
  • Germany should actively oppose EU policies that risk the isolation and exclusion of refugees and migrants at the European level. These policies threaten rights of refugees and migrants, and fuel racism.
